Drive Reduced
750 gigabyte hard drive has been reduced to 130gb. How do I use a linux install to fix the MBR?
I’m not going to pretend I know what I’m talking about, my mate told me that my hard drive, that has lost most of it’s capacity for some reason, could be fixed if I install linux and do something vague that will rewrite the Master Boot Record. The hard drive has been wiped clean, ministry of defense standard data wipe clean, but still only registers as 130GB. Any help will be highly apreciated.
Also bonus points if you can tell me why my other hard drive will install windows XP just fine but then returns with a STOP 0X0000000B7 error and asks me to scan for viruses or spyware. I don’t know how it expects me to do that with fresh install of windows and no access to antivirus software.
So long story short, will formatting the MBR or flashing the BIOS help me solve this most troubling of affairs? Thanks in advance.
OK it sounds like the partition size is only 130GB. XP doesn’t support more than 130GB without service packs, so you should at least install service pack 2:

After service pack 2 is installed, you will need to stretch the partition. I like to use a free tool called gparted to do this. You can get a gparted live cd here:

Download that and burn it to a CD with imgburn (also free):

Once you got your gparted live cd burned, reboot your computer with it in the cd drive.
It should automatically boot from the CD, if it doesn’t make sure your bios is set to boot from cd first.
It will bring up a menu, just press enter on the default option and wait for the gparted live environment to start.
Once it starts, click your Windows partition and choose “resize”
Stretch it to use all the free space and choose “Apply”
Let it resize (It may take a while)
After it has resized, restart and boot back into Windows. Now the 750GB should show up no problem
